Zinc Plays a Key Role in Better Aging – Keeps Seniors Healthy

Two recent studies addressed the role of zinc in maintaining health in older people. One, a 12-month study of 50 nursing home residents 65 years old or older found that people with low levels of zinc, 70 micrograms per deciliter or less, had twice the incidence of pneumonia and took nearly 50% more antibiotic prescriptions during the study period than individuals who had normal levels of zinc.

Insufficient Levels Of Vitamin D Puts Elderly At Increased Risk Of Dying From Heart Disease

The study found that older adults with insufficient levels of vitamin D die from heart disease at greater rates that those with adequate levels of the vitamin. Because older adults tend to spend more time indoors their exposure to the sun is limited. In addition, as we age our ability to make vitamin D is reduced. The study found  that current daily recommendations of vitamin D may not be enough for older adults to maintain optimal health.
